OFFER FROM THE AUTHOR TO THE MUNICIPALITY OF TABUAÇO TO INTEGRATE THE COLLECTION OF THE ABEL BOTELHO MUSEUM, IN TABUAÇO

Portuguese Army General Staff officer, politician, diplomat, journalist, art critic, essayist, poet, dramatist, storyteller and notable and «audacious» novelist, Abel Acácio de Almeida Botelho was born in Tabuaço on September 23, 1854, having deceased in Buenos-Aires on April 24, 1917, while exercised the functions of Plenipotentiary Minister of Portugal in the Republic of Argentina, since 1912.

Abel Botelho, as a writer, is considered a representative, in Portugal, of the naturalism of Émile Zola, and its greatest exponent in Portuguese lands. His work, both in theater and in literature, with the exception of the volume of short stories Mulheres da Beira, belongs to the category of raw and hard literature, in which the author draws, in fact with a master's hand, paintings of the most sordid and sickening social misery, as a form of social criticism.

Abel Botelho was considered an academic of merit at the Academia das Belas-Artes and a member of the National Monuments Commission. It was also one of the fathers of the Portuguese Republic flag, along with Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro and João Chagas.

Abel Botelho also had artistic skills, drawing to perfection, with pen, and collaborating with drawings for the Occidente magazine. It is said that he often made sketches of the interior and exterior spaces where the plots of his novels took place, as a way of helping to elaborate his prose.

Abel Botelho was portrayed and caricatured by countless artists, including Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro, António Ramalho, Francisco Valença, José Tagarro, among others. These are now humbly joined by Gustavo Monteiro de Almeida, in homage to this illustrious man born in Tabuaço.
